Downloading From The Internet

Is there a file or program that you are wanting to download, and you are just not sure how to go about it?  Well, below I have supplied step by step instructions on the process of downloading from the internet.  The process is not a difficult one, but when doing it for the first time, sometimes a little guidance helps so you wil know what to expect.

Making a Download Directory

Before we actually download anything, you must first make a place, or folder, to put the files you download.  It is best to have one central folder where all downloaded files go.  This way, your downloaded files will be more organized, and you will know where they will be located.  To make afolder, or place for your downloaded files, do the following:

  1. Bring up windows explorer by holding down the right windows key and hit the letter E.
    2. You will land in a tree view on My Computer.  Arrow down two times to your Local Drive or C:.
    3. Hit alt F for the file menu, hit enter on new, and hit the letter F for folder.
    4. A default folder will be created with the name New Folder.  You should hear, edit New Folder.
    5. Type in the name you want to give the folder, like downloads or my downloads, and hit enter.
    6. Your done, your folder has now been created!  If you would like to make a shortcut of the folder and put that shortcut on your desktop, so you can access it from the desktop, then just visit my Shortcut & hotkey Page.

Downloading a File

Now you have somewhere to put your downloaded files, so now you are ready to download.  In most cases, the steps outlined below will work when downloading a file, but sometimes your internet browser might act differently depending on the type of file.  For example, if you are trying to download a text file, html file, or PDF file.  If the steps do not work below, please just refer to the section below called Alternative Downloading Method.  To download a file from the internet, do the following:

  1. Hit enter on the link of the file you want to download.
    2. This should bring up  a file download dialog box.  If you are not put on the save button, then tab to the save button and press the space bar.
    3. This will bring up a save as dialog box and put you in the file name edit box, but the file name is automatically put into the edit field, so you do not have to type anything.
    4. To make sure the file is going to be saved in the downloads folder you created, tab around until you get to the save in combo box.  If the folder named is the download folder that you created, then skip to step 9 below.
    5. Hit the down arrow to open the combo box.
    6. Hit the home key to go to the top of the list, then arrow down until you get to your local drive or C:, then hit enter.
    7. Tab one time to get to the list of folders.  Arrow down until you get to your folder, then hit enter.
    8. Now that you have specified that folder as your download folder, all of your downloads will go there until you change it.
    9. Tab to the save button and hit the space bar.  This will start downloading the file.
    10. Once the download is complete all dialogs will automatically close out, and you should be back on the web page that you were on when you started the download process.

Alternative Downloading Method

Sometimes when you hit enter on a link of a file that you want to download, your internet browser will automatically open the file, either within your browser, or within another program outside the browser which is needed to run the program.  To download these type of files using Jaws for Windows, do the following:

1.  Get on the link of the file you want to download.
2. Hit Insert F7 to bring up the links list, and you should automatically be put on that link within the list.
3. Tab to the move to link button and hit the space bar.  This will put you on the link and make sure the focus is on that particular link.
4. Hit the applications key for the context menu, arrow down to save as, and hit enter.
5. This will bring up a save as dialog box and put you in the file name edit box, but the file name is automatically put into the edit field, so you do not have to type anything.
6. To make sure the file is going to be saved in the downloads folder you created, tab around until you get to the save in combo box.  If the folder named is the download folder that you created, then skip to step 11 below.
7. Hit the down arrow to open the combo box.
8. Hit the home key to go to the top of the list, then arrow down until you get to your local drive or C:, then hit enter.
9. Tab one time to get to the list of folders.  Arrow down until you get to your folder, then hit enter.
10. Now that you have specified that folder as your download folder, all of your downloads will go there until you change it.
11. Tab to the save button and hit the space bar.  This will start downloading the file.
12. Once the download is complete all dialogs will automatically close out, and you should be back on the web page that you were on when you started the download process.
