Most computers have spyware running on them, and the user does not even realize it! Spyware can get on your computer just by simply surfing the Internet. Most spyware is harmless, but there is some spyware that can really take control of your system and really eat up your resources. It is because of the harmful spyware that it is recommended that you scan your system about once a week.
To scan your computer:
1. Start up Spybot Search & Destroy.
2. You will land on a check for problems button. Just hit the space bar to start the scanning process. Jaws for Windows might say menu, but please ignore,
I am not sure why Jaws does this, but it has no effect on the scanning process.
3. You can hit Insert page down to read the status bar. It will tell you how many items it has scanned,
and how many items there are going to be scanned in total so you will know how far
there is to go.
4. When the scan is complete, you are automatically put in a list of items that
were found! You can arrow up and down the
items to see what Spybot Search & Destroy found on your system. This list works like a tree view. You might here an item and at the end of that item you might hear,
two enteries. To display these enteries
just hit the right arrow key. Now you can
arrow down through those specific items. To close that list of enteries, hit the left arrow key on the title
line for those enteries. Most of the enteries
will automatically be checked by default, but check an entry that is not checked
or to uncheck one, just hit the space bar on that specific entry.
5. Now when all items are checked that you want to delete, just hit alt F for fix
all selected problems.
6. It will ask you if you are sure you want to do this, just tab to the Yes button
and hit the space bar.
7. Once the items are deleted, it will give you a dialog informing you of this and
an OK button. Just hit the space bar on
the OK button.
8. Your done! Alt f4 to exit the program.
When you scan your computer with Spybot Search & Destroy, and delete the items that it finds, spybot search & destroy actually quarantines the items and does not actually delete them off of your system. The reason for this is for safety reasons. In case you delete something that should not be deleted, spybot search & destroy quarantines the items in case you need to undo what you have deleted. For this reason, every now and then, you should empty your quarantined items.
Another thing spybot search & destroy does, is it makes a text log file of the results of every scan you do of your system. It does this so you can look at the results of the scan and see what was found and what you will be deleting. Along with the quarantined folder, you should also time to time empty the log file folder. Both folders are found in the same directory.
Below you will find the directory of where this quarantine and log folder is located.
